Ipod Backup

Postby jimbojones on Wed Sep 24, 2008 10:18 am

hi,
i recently had my ipod stolen and was lucky enough to get it back :D , i had backed it up before it was stolen and crap music put on it. im currently trying to back up it up, there was about 2800 tracks and sum movies and tv... and its taking aaages to just analyse the backup file and also there was a pop window saying there was an error with sum java thingy....

"Unhandled Exception, error during restore process. Eception of Type 'Java.util.zipException' was thrown"
so far its only analysing and it bin over 14hours... is this normal or does that error mesage mean its not going to work??
i was also wondering if theres any chance i can use that backup file with another program or if theres a way to get the music out of it.

thanks alot. Caleb :|

Ps. more of a feedback thing but, the loading screen that comes up when your backing up is rather ambiguos and especially if its taking hours, as theres no info just an animation your not really sure if anything is actually happening :?

Hi Caleb

Sure not a problem. Just rename the backup file from <whatever>.ipod to <whatever>.zip, and open it with winzip or 7-zip or any other zip application. The .ipod backup file is really just a zip file. All you have to do is extract the zip file back to your formatted iPod (use froddle pod to format the iPod first). Once you've done that your iPod will be fully restored.

Re: Ipod Backup. File Types "UNSUPPORTED COMPrESSION METHOD"

Postby jimbojones on Fri Sep 26, 2008 4:45 am

Hi ,
thanks for the previous reply...

I tried to to do what you suggested, unzipping directly into the ipod however during the unzipping process(i used 7zip) it showed a very long error message saying next to all the file names that there was an unsupported compression method or something. when it had finished i checked the ipod in itunes and there my music was but then i tried to play the music and it didnt work, infact i think about 99% of it didnt work. so kind of back to square one.ive reformated now and need another way of getting the music out of the backup file and onto my ipod.

hope you have some idea whats going wrong... i feel like im very close to getting my music back so plzz dont fail me now Froddlepod
8-) ;)

thank youuuuu

Hi Caleb

Try using alternative zip applications, the trial version of winzip for example. If you are using windows XP or above then you can browse the zip file like a folder. Just right click on the zip file and in the popup menu select 'open with' -> 'Compressed (zipped) Folders'. You should be able to browse the zip file like it was any other folder. you can try copying (dragging) the iPod_Control folder out of the zip folder into another folder onto your PC and then copy it from there onto your iPod (or you could try copying it directly to the iPod). If you just need the music/videos you can browse to that folder '\iPod_Control\Music' and copy all the music out. It's highly unlikely the zip file is corrupt but you could also try a zip repair tool if all else fails.

Hi,there:
i want to know what you used to backup your ipod. As far as i know, itunes don't offer this backup function, right? You have to reply the three party tool to get it backeup.i am not sure if you can get your data back compeletly. But i want to give you a recommendation about a tool that i am always using in case that the same disaster happen again. It is named Aniosoft ibackup which allows you to backup your ipod into any storage device and recover it without any change into other devices. And easy to use. Anyway good luck to you.
